Welcome to “ the purpose to Repurpose” the podcast that explores solution to transition in the fashion industry . I'm Sinead, and today we're delving into the story of a once-thriving shopping center and its transformation over the past 15 years. It's a tale of shifting consumer habits, changing city dynamics, and the nostalgia that lingers.
15 years ago, the shopping center was the place to go. I remember going shopping with my mom at least twice a month. Even if we didn't always end up buying something, the routine was going to the city, walking around, and inevitably ending up in the mall. It felt like a ritual.
I was living in a medium-sized city, and we had a commercial area in Augny just outside of the city. That place required a car to access. We also had shops in the city with a high street shopping center, and two luxury mall Galerie de Lafayette, and a Printemps.
Years went by, and things began to change. An outdoor shopping center opened in Augny, offering a new shopping experience. Later, a new center emerged in the city, but not on the main shopping streets. This shift began to alter the city's dynamics.
They had a few new brands, but some were the same. The bustling city streets started to empty as collective groups gravitated towards the new shopping centers. The once-vibrant mall in the city began to have empty slots, and one day, Printemps, a longstanding fixture, closed down. The market seemed saturated.
These changes affected not only the city's landscape but also how I approached shopping. The continuous openings felt overwhelming, and all the closings left a lasting impact.
Walking in the city doesn't feel the same anymore. Instead of vibrant streets, you now see signs that read "For Sale," "To Rent," "Destocking," and fewer people lingering. The most challenging thought is that it doesn't mean we consume less; we do it differently, and it changed so quickly.
Our cityscapes are evolving rapidly, reflecting the shifting preferences and behaviours of consumers. The story of this shopping center encapsulates a broader trend happening in many cities across France. So, what's next?
In the next episode, we'll explore the mills a repurposed shopping center that is know a community co-working eco-center focused on fashion sustainability.
