Host (Narrator): Welcome to my podcast "the purpose to Repurpose " I'm your host, Sinead , and today, I am taking you on a journey to Aubervilliers, a suburb just north of Paris. This neighborhood, known for its historical challenges, is currently undergoing significant changes, largely due to the upcoming Olympics. But what's really happening on the ground? Let's explore the transformation, the struggles, and the potential opportunities of this city.
Aubervilliers sits at the doorstep of the 19th arrondissement. It has had a reputation for being a tough neighborhood in the past, and even as changes are occurring, it's essential to recognize that transformation remains a work in progress.
The neighborhood is a vibrant mix of residential areas and factories. Right next to my building is a massive printing facility, and several other factories stand shoulder to shoulder with apartment complexes.
Recent incidents have brought attention to the ongoing challenges faced here. Just a few months ago, a significant warehouse went up in flames, followed by a smaller one nearby, both storing clothing. These incidents occurred within a five-minute walk from my home.
Walking around my area is far from pleasant. Even near the canal, which one might expect to be a peaceful area with green spaces and even tho we have a small the community garden along the water, it is not enough. The presence of homeless individuals and a considerable amount of litter exhibits the social challenges the city is facing. This unpleasant sight is exacerbated by a massive empty shopping center nearby.
behind the shopping mall There is a large green space with trees . However, it's fenced off and fitted with spikes to discourage anyone from accessing it without going inside the mall. And This shopping Center is mostly deserted, but people still come to enjoy the greenery and fast food. So it has potential for community gathering.
Additionally, within a kilometer, there are not one but two enormous wholesale shopping centers. The fashion center claims to have 200 showrooms, and CIFA mentions 280 wholesalers. It's worth considering what could happen if we were to transform these shopping centers into more community-oriented spaces, given the challenges and dynamics of this area.
The transformation of Aubervilliers is a complex process with many facets. It's a place of contrasts and potential, and it's essential to dig deeper into the issues and opportunities that lie within this unique neighborhood.
In the next episodes, I will share my experience of the life of a shopping mall and the change we are currently seeing in consumption.
Thank you for joining me today. Love on you all.
